According to the fact that there has never existed a symbol for human rights before the initiative „A  logo for human rights“ proclaimed a design contest on the platform in 2011. Everyone able to design a logo was allowed to participate in the contest and to upload first drafts on the internet.

Since the start of the initiative on 3 May 2011 more than 15.000 logo submissions from 190 countries were handed in. From the 100 top-rated designs, a prominent international jury (including human rights defenders such as Aung San Suu Kyi, Ai Weiwei, Muhammad Yunus, Michael Gorbatchev and Jimmy Carter) chose the Top 10, out of which the internet community selected the winning logo. On 23 September 2011, the Human Rights Logo was unveiled in New York. The winning design by Predrag Stakic of Serbia combines the shape of a hand with that of a bird.
